Mercer’s surf life saving journey began at the club as a five year old. So when he died suddenly of a heart attack while driving on the Gold Coast on August 28 many in the northern Illawarra community were keen to know of any local memorial service.
Thirroul SLSC president Jeff Body said after consulting with the Mercer family he was pleased to confirm that “Thirroul SLSC will celebrate Dean at a special vigil on Saturday at 10am. We welcome friends, family and those that have been touched by our champion to attend”.
The paddle-out coincides with the Thirroul Surf Club’s 110th anniversary. Mr Body said the Mercer family supported the invitation for 110 members and friends to join the paddle-out for Dean at 10am. The club and family also don’t mind if many more than 110 people participate in the paddle-out.
“Please bring your own board, goggles or ski. At this occasion we will gather together, celebrate, reflect and go forth to acknowledge a wonderful life cut short,” he said.
“We welcome you to stay on and join in with the presentations, banter and reminiscing that will be part of our 110 Year celebration at 12 midday.”
