A small factory fire behind an electrical engineering business at Unanderra saw evacuations and southbound lanes of the Princes Highway closed during Friday morning peak hour.
Multiple triple-0 calls were made to alert emergencies services of the blaze at the rear of the Dynelec building near Orange Grove Avenue around 8am.
The first fire crew were on the scene within seven minutes with another six more teams close behind. No-one was hurt in the blaze.
Inspector Andy Barber from Fire and Rescue NSW said due to the easy access of the industrial site and the large contingent of firefighters they were able to contain the blaze within 15 minutes.
“It was accidental by one of the employees,” Inspector Barber said.
The blaze began in a large spray painting booth at the rear of the premises and caused damage to cladding and the roof of the building as well as cabling and materials.
Gas testing was undertaken once the fire was extinguished and other safety measures to ensure the premises were safe for the workers to return.
