General manager Mark Sleigh told those at the tourism body’s end of year partner function at the Big Bash warm up game between the Sydney Sixers and Hobart Hurricanes at North Dalton Park. She made the decision after being elected to council in October. She has a full time job and an increased workload as a councillor and Mr Sleigh said it was disappointing but the team understood the demands on her time. She said it had been an absolute privileged to work with the Destination Wollongong team who “deliver so much for our city”.
Cr Brown said Elton John in the Gong was an absolute highlight and the work that has gone into the Wigan and Hull match at WIN Stadium in February is another.
“This year we have delivered over 30 major events that have brought over $50 million into our visitor economy,” she said.
“On personal note it was an absolute honour to be chair.”
Mr Sleigh said as a leader and a mentor Cr Brown was someone who doesn’t know the meaning of the word no, is incredibly strategic and achieved so much as chair.
“She has overseen what has been a fantastic period for Destination Wollongong,” he said.
“It has been a fantastic two years for us. Obviously the cruise ships are a big part of our message and the major events have gone from strength to strength. I think Wollongong has become a destination brand that has grown dramatically. And out visitor numbers are through the roof.”
