Shortly after 1.30pm, the 33-year-old man was caught in a rip and pulled 100 metres out to sea.
Because he had been swimming between the flags lifesavers saw him and were able to respond quickly.
He was rescued and an ambulance was called due to fears of water in his lungs.
He was taken to Wollongong Hospital.
