Defending champions Brett Pieper and Scott Bateup’s title defence got off to the worst possible start when they fell to Matt Constable and Luke Cocksedge in the opening game of the day.
They steadied the ship somewhat with a big victory over Godwin Buhagair and Brian Purdie and ultimately secured a spot in post sectional play with a dominant victory over Derek Jackson and Ray Groves in the final match of the day. Pieper and Bateup claimed the section 2wins+26.
Fresh off a comfortable victory in his singles section, Shane Garvey returned to pair with Shane Leonard in a competitive section 22. The pair made a positive start to the day, recording big victories in their first two matches and wound up comfortable section winners 3wins+32.
Former world champion Jeremy Henry and his partner Geoff Burke made light work of their section 23 rivals to sail through to Tuesday’s post sectional play.
Aaron Teys and Ray Pearse also claimed their section, 3wins+34. Father-son pairing Warren and Jared Hamilton comfortably claimed section eight, 2wins+30. Toby Peters and Matthew Miles combined to claim a competitive section 28 3wins+22. The victory saw the pair eliminate brothers Matt and Greg Jeans.
Section two came down to the last match, with Beau Prideaux and Jay Breust facing Tony Roach and Les Smith in a section-deciding clash. Prideaux and Breust ultimately claimed the match and the section 3wins+14.
