But not Delta Amidzovski.
The 12-year-old is a multi-discipline star, excelling on the track in the hurldes and in the field in the long jump, triple jump and high jump.
Amidzovski has rattled off a string of impressive results in recent weeks. Representing Wollongong Athletics, she won the under 14 girls high jump and finished second in the 80m hurdles at last month’s Australian Junior Championships. She then backed up a fortnight later to claim four medals at the NSW Little Athletics State Championships.
The Albion Park athlete won gold in the under 12 girls high jump before winning silver in the 60 metre hurdles, long jump and triple jump. Amidzovski missed out on gold in the long jump by just one centimetre. On top of that, she broke the state record in the hurdles but finished one-hundredth of a second behind the winner.
Delta’s mother Becky said her daughter’s achievements are the result of hard work and sacrifice.
“She’s put in an immense amount of work,” Amidzovski said. “She trains minimum five days a week. Since she’s a hurdler and a jumper, it takes a lot of training to be able to train for all events and hence why she has three coaches at the moment.
“She loves to train, loves to compete, doesn’t complain at all, loves to be down at the track. She passes up many friends invitations and misses out on a lot of things other kids are doing. But she enjoys it and that’s what she wants to do.”
Like many athletes, Delta was taken down to the track as a youngster by her parents after they noticed an active streak in their young child. From there, her love of the sport has flourished.
“She began in tiny tots with Albion Park Little Athletics, as a three-year-old. She ventured into the sport because she was an active child, she liked running, climbing, skipping. We introduced her to it and that’s where she’s been ever since.”
