The man was stabbed in a home invasion at Figtree overnight, police said.
A crime scene has been established and forensic officers were marking out the scene Tuesday morning.
The Mercury understands the victim was visiting a property on the Princes Highway when he was repeatedly stabbed.
He sought help at the home of an elderly couple next door.
Bob, 76, said the victim escaped the fight and came “running for his life”.
The victim pounded on Bob’s door with a piece of pipe.
“Blood was everywhere … [he kept saying] ‘I’m dying, I’m dying, I’m dying,” Bob, who called police while the man was in his hallway, told the Mercury.
Bob’s elderly wife was also home at the time. There are blood drops on the stairs of his home.
Police attention is focused on a red pipe discarded at the door and covered in blood.
