But they didn’t actually think that he would be picked.
The pair, then, got quite the surprise when Lorelle was contacted and informed that Jarrah had been selected as just one of four MiniRoos to appear on the box of Aldi’s Wheat Biscuits from May.
“We filmed a video in January and uploaded it, but didn’t expect anything to come of it,” Lorelle said. “Then in March they contacted me and we found out he had been picked.
“A couple of days later Jarrah was picked up and taken to Sydney for a big photo shoot. It was full on, but he was super excited.”
The eight-year-old has been playing football since he was five and is currently a member of the Wollongong Wolves SAP Academy. According to Lorelle, he was hooked from the moment he first saw a football.
“Football is really fun,” Jarrah said. “I get to play with my friends and I like playing right back.”
As part of his competition win, Longbottom was whisked up to Sydney for a tour of the Fox Sports studios and the opportunity to commentate a game and had the VIP experience of a lifetime at the A-League Grand Final in May.
Along with the other winners, Longbottom enjoyed a tour of Newcastle in a Hummer, spent time on the playing field and presented the medals to victorious Melbourne players.
At the match, Longbottom was lucky enough to meet his idol, Archie Thompson, but that wasn’t the highlight of the night.
“Going in the stretch Hummer was the best part, they had lollies and soft drinks and we got to stand up and it was like a big party in there.”
The other perks of winning the competition? The popularity that comes with having your photo on Wheat Biscuit boxes around the country.
“People call me the Weet-Bix kid.”
