Roach was also shocked and a little surprised to find out that wine in Bordeaux had become too expensive to drink for the locals.
On Sunday at the Wollongong Art Gallery he learnt that everyone likes good quality red wine, especially if it’s for free.
“It’s day one of Dry July and everyone has come in here to drink wine. It’s fantastic,” Roach said.
“Geoff Burton has brought in some beautiful wines from his Gundog Estate winery.
“I’m really happy that the room is crowded. People are excited and so am I.”
The free event formed part of the gallery’s 40th ‘Ruby’ anniversary program.
The event included a screening of Red Obsession and Q&A session with Roach.
The documentary (narrated by Russell Crowe) takes the audience on a journey from Bordeaux to China, and shows two disparate and powerful cultures struggling to find common ground over their love of rare wine.
“I love wine but I’m no wine buff. So it was important we made the film for a general audience,” Roach said.
“Doing that I think is the reason the film won lots of awards and we managed to get it into cinemas, which is unusual for a documentary.”
