3.50pm: A truck stuck under the University Avenue overpass on the M1 Princes Motorway at Gwynneville is causing traffic chaos on Wollongong roads ahead of Tuesday afternoon’s peak.
The motorway remains closed in both directions. The University Avenue overpass is also closed to traffic as engineers assess the extent of the damage caused.
Motorists have been urged to avoid the area and delay their travel, if possible. Queues on the motorway had stretched to seven kilometres, as at 3.50pm.
Drivers have been warned to expect significant delays. The NSW Transport Management Centre says motorists should allow about 40 minutes of extra travel time.
Diversions for light vehicles
- Southbound: M1 Princes Motorway motorists will be diverted down Bulli Pass to use Princes Highway, Memorial Drive and rejoin the M1 Princes Motorway.
- Northbound: Memorial Drive, Princes Highway via Bulli Pass to rejoin M1 Princes Motorway.
Traffic around the University of Wollongong can use the on-ramp from the Northfields Avenue/Irvine Street roundabout to access the motorway northbound, just north of the accident site.
Light vehicles travelling towards Wollongong on Picton Road could consider using Mount Keira Road as an alternative.
Diversions for heavy vehicles
- Southbound: M1 Princes Motorway, use the University Avenue off-ramp then use the on-ramp to rejoin the motorway.
- Northbound: Memorial Drive, Princes Highway and Mount Ousley Road to rejoin M1 Princes Motorway.
Emergency services, traffic crews and an engineer remain at the site of the stuck truck, which became wedged under the overpass about 12.15pm on Tuesday.
The motorway is expected to remain closed for some time. Exactly how long is unclear at this stage.
A NSW Transport Management Centre spokeswoman said engineers were expected to take a closer look at the bridge “in the next hour or so”.
“Once they’ve actually had a look at the bridge, we’ll have a better idea of what’s going to happen,” she said of when the motorway might reopen.
