IAS Athlete Coach and Program Manager Dane Robinson said the induction was a good opportunity to outline the Academy’s plans for the year and he’s looking forward to a season of athletic growth and achievement.
“It was a great day, full of knowledge and past experience for the kids to get a gauge off and look forward to the year ahead,” Robinson said.
“Our goal is to aid in the development of every one of our athletes and their athletic endeavours. We aim to play a supporting role, aiding the development of the talented kids in the program.”
The Academy will place a heavy emphasis on off-field development this year, with Robinson placing a particular focus on educating athletes on the ways nutrition and sports psychology can enhance performance.
”Our main focus is to create better all-round individuals. We want our athletes to be better on the field and off the field and we’re encouraging that community focus.
“We’ve also turned our sports psychology program on its head, and also our nutrition program. We’re focusing on a webinar based education delivery and focusing more on outcomes than content. We don’t want to just throw content at athletes, we want to empower them to learn themselves.”
Since stepping into the role heading up the IAS programs in August, Robinson has focused on building on the Academy structures already in place. In his three months in the Illawarra, he has been impressed by the talent on display.
“I’ve been to all trials bar AFL and was blown away by the talent. The skill on display has been superb and I’m looking forward to seeing the training start.
“I will play more of an overseeing role of the entire program and assisting the coaches. I’m implementing a coach development program and that’s where I get more hands on, educating the coaches. I’m looking forward to getting down on the ground and seeing them in action.”
