The alleged offender entered Sunset Petroleum on Windang Road wielding a weapon – reportedly a machete – at staff around 6:45pm.
Lake Illawarra Police District’s Sergeant Matt Brophy said the man has then gone behind the counter and demanded money from employees.
“There were three employees in the store and two of them ran out and … he chased after them,” Sgt Brophy said.
The man is claimed to have not gotten very far before deciding to flee the scene.
Police say he was unsuccessful in obtaining any cash or goods from staff.
Sgt Brophy said anyone with any information should contact Lake Illawarra Police or Crime Stoppers.
