No, not Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic or Serena Williams, but North Wollongong’s Sienna Lokker.
The 13-year-old beat out thousands of applicants through a rigorous 10-month selection process to be named as one of the tournament’s ballkids.
After such an arduous process of training and trials, Lokker admits she was overcome with emotions when she found out she had been selected.
“When I found out that I was going to be an Australian Open ballkid I was over the moon, I was so excited I even cried,” Sienna said.
“I was so ready, excited and nervous to be on the court with such amazing players and to just be at the Open.”
While the tournament will be her first Australian Open as a ballkid, she has impressed in the role at major tournaments throughout the year.
Lokker was a ballkid during Australia’s victorious Fed Cup tie in Wollongong in April and featured at the Invictus Games in October.
Given it’s her first Grand Slam, Lokker knows she is in for an intense fortnight, however she’s also looking forward to meeting new friends from around Australia and countries including France, China, India and Korea. She is just one of 29 Australian ballkids that was selected that does not come from Victoria.
“I am most looking forward to just being on the court ballkidding because I think that it is going to be an amazing experience and I will definitely treasure it forever.
“I am also looking forward to making new friends from all around the country and some other parts of the world.”
Lokker will continue training throughout the next few weeks, before the Australian Open officially commences at Melbourne Park on January 14.
If she is able to impress her coaches throughout the tournament, she may earn the opportunity to act as a ballkid for the men’s final.
