Lots of them, in fact.

Ms Smith's Omnibus project is a collection of poems about the bus routes across the Illawarra.

Those routes include Nos 1, 2, 34, 53, 55 and 65 - and she tapped on and off all of them as part of her research.

As someone who doesn't have a driver's licence - she had lessons but found driving "both dull and scary at the same time" - Ms Smith relies on buses to get from point A to point B.

While the wheels of those buses went round and round, she realised she was riding on a rich vein of material.

"As I was bussing my way around Wollongong, especially with young kids, I noticed there was this whole life and culture that my car-driving friends were missing out on," Ms Smith said.

"I think there's a perception that public transport is a bit boring, awkward, not as good - that the place to be is sitting in your car.

"Apart from the fact that I'd had lots of experiences and had a lot of things to write about, I wanted to shift people's thinking about what public transport is like."

Sometimes the poems don't include things that actually happened - like a deer boarding a bus at Keiraville or having an imaginary conversation with professor and writer Mary Beard.

But Ms Smith said there were plenty of real things that happen on buses that car drivers are really missing out on.

"They're missing out on connections with other people - sometimes you do have really interesting chats," she said.

"Or you can just observe other people who live in your neighbourhood. You don't have to talk to them but you get a sense of who else there is in the world.

"And they also miss out on a lot of good reading time.and the windows are a lot bigger than in your car - lovely big picture windows.

"And sometimes you get to see the back streets of suburbs you didn't know existed."

To help promote Culture Bank Ali Jane Smith will be reading some of her Omnibus poems at its stall at Puckeys Night Market at Innovation Campus on Wednesday.
