Inspector Brett Wall said the offender is alleged to have entered the Caltex around 1:46am and threatened the male store attendant with a knife.
"[He] threatened the store employee demanding money," Inspector Wall said.
"The victim has complied and the offender has then left the store ... and was last seen running west on Crown Street."
Police arrived at the scene soon after and canvassed the area, but to no avail.
The bandit was wearing a black hooded jumper with the hood pulled over his head at the time, and a bandanna over his face shielding his identity.
He is described as being around the age of 20, Caucasian appearance and about 175cm tall.
The employee was physically unharmed in the attack.
