As of 12:45pm on Tuesday 1311 customers were without power in Thirroul. There were also around 36 customers affected at Jamberoo, Kiama and Jerrara.
Other outages have occurred at Mittagong (431), Haywards Bay (284), Wandandian (187), Sussex Inlet (31), Albion Park Rail (51), Thirlmere (35), Bewong (33), and Bowral (32).
A spokeswoman said the main damage has been caused by trees and branches falling over power lines in the windy weather conditions.
Customers can check updates about local power supplies by calling 131 003 and entering their postcodes.
At 1:13pm the a fallen tree on the M1 Princes Motorway (just past Picton Road) at Bellambi Creek was causing closures northbound due to a fallen tree. Motorosts should allow extra travel time.
A Rural Fire Service spokesman said they had been having a quiet morning up until about midday. In the past hour they have also responded to a second tree down at Picton Road and two separate incidents at Otford.
As of 2pm, the State Emergency Service has received 47 calls for assistance in the Illawarra since late Monday. Public Affairs Officer Ilana Pender-Rose said they were mainly for trees down because of strong winds and plenty of damage to roofs.
She said the SES advises people to park their car under cover during severe weather events and tie down anything in their backyards which could blow away, like trampolines.
Albion Park had recorded wind gusts up to 92 km/h at 9:12am, with gusts about 85 km/h elsewhere around the Illawarra.
A severe weather warning remains in place for NSW coast - from the South Coast and Illawarra up to Coffs Harbour - on Tuesday.
