Illawarra orchestra Steel City Strings has been honoured with a national award for their work to promoting and performing new Australian music on Monday night.
The group, lead by Kyle Little, received the APRA Music Award for Art Music, Award for Excellence in a Regional Area.
"Always a commitment of our ensemble to always look beyond playing the [usual] works that are performed," Mr Little said.
"It's just a testament of all the work we have been doing as an organisation and I really hope this means it will open up more avenues for the ensemble to perform either new works or new opportunities to perform in the region and broader areas in NSW."
The awards are a collaboration between APRA, AMCOS and the Australian Music Center. While they are the only national event to recognise composers, performers and educators in the field of contemporary classical, jazz and experimental music.
Illawarra composers Adrian Whitehall and John Spence have had their orchestra debut some of their works in the past.
Steel City Strings next perform in Wollongong at St Francis Xavier Church on September 21. www.trybooking.com
