Helensburgh Volunteer Rural Fire Brigade, along with Bulli, Darkes Forest and other Illawarra brigades, were called to the blaze just before 11am Saturday.
"No immediate threats to homes and the highway is open," the RFS advised.
"Slow down in smoky areas."
It was a busy day for Illawarra fire fighters, with a second bushfire flaring up at Mount Kembla just before 3.30pm.
