Police inquires are continuing after officers were called to Windy Gully car park at Cordeaux Road, Mount Kembla on Sunday night to a report of a car on fire.
Illawarra Rural Fire Service district officer David Hitchens said crews responded to reports a car had been pushed over the edge of an embankment.
"The vehicle needed to be recovered before it could be fully extinguished," he said.
"We had to call in a private contractor to move the car."
Mr Hitchens said early detection of a blaze and therefore the swift emergency response to put it out was paramount.
"If you see a fire then let us know as that will help our crews get on site more quickly," he said.
"Once the fire is allowed to run it is hard to get it under control in these dry conditions.
"Stolen car fires dumped in bush is a potentially huge problem that can cause a lot of damage if not brought under control.
"When a random person dumps a car then it is hard to monitor or predict.
"That's why RFS rely on early detection and information provided by the public."
Meanwhile, police are also appealing for help to identify two men who were seen in the Cataract Lake Foreshore area around the time of a bushfire was lit.
Police would like to speak with the men as they may be able to assist with inquiries.
Smoke was seen billowing in the water catchment area from the end of a fire trail near Appin Road at Bulli Tops about 10am on December 7.
Rural Fire Service and Water NSW crews were called and extinguished the fire, which spread to approximately 50m by 50m.
There was a total fire ban enforced in the Illawarra region at the time.
The two fires are not believed to be linked.
Detectives attached to Wollongong Police District started an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire as it was suspected to be deliberately lit.
The first man is described as being of Caucasian appearance, with fair skin and a slim build.
He was wearing long black pants, a black cap, black canvas shoes and carrying a black backpack and a fishing road with an orange protective sleeve.
The second man is described as being of Caucasian appearance, with tanned skin and a slim build.
He was wearing long dark pants, a white cap, black canvas shoes and carrying a black backpack and a black and red sleeping bag.
A police spokeswoman echoed Mr Hitchens' message and also urged residents to "be vigilant" and report suspicious activity or fires immediately to Triple 0.
The message come as parts of the Illawarra such as Albion Park will top 39 degrees by Saturday.
Temperatures in Wollongong are expected to reach 33 degrees on Thursday and 32 degrees on Saturday.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Wollongong detectives on 4226 7759 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
