Four ambulance crews were called to the intersection of Emerson Street and Atkinson Avenue after reports the rider came off his bike at 6.15pm.

Paramedics assessed the man in his 40s, who was complaining of hip and lower back pain.

He was taken to Wollongong Hospital in a stable condition.

The driver and passengers of the car, two women and a child, were assessed by paramedics but were uninjured.

The intersection remains closed as Fire and Rescue crews clean up the oil spill on the road.

Police were also called to the scene.
