The undulation in Towradgi Road as it goes over the rail line is well known to locals; some of them are prone to try and get airborne as they go over it.
It's even been the subject of a song by Wollongong variety act The Four Kinsmen.
But Wollongong City Council has decided enough is enough and is looking into a range of measures to put an end to Dukes of Hazzard style driving.
Council is planning to put in speed bumps on either side of the bridge, to deter leadfoots from trying to build up enough speed on the approaches to see how high they can get on the hump.
"There have been some serious rear-end crashes on the westbound approach to Memorial Drive," a council spokesman said.
"There are also accounts of speeding eastbound vehicles becoming airborne at this point on Towradgi Road."
The speed bumps will be placed as close to the Towradgi Hump as possible, with a view to not obstructing residents' driveways.
There will also be changes at the intersection with Carters Lane - right turns into and out of Carters Lane will be banned.
The zebra crossing will be removed due to problems with pedestrian safety.
"At the moment, you'll often see vehicles driving around others that have stopped at the crossing waiting to let people cross," a council spokesman said.
"As it's unsafe, the crossing doesn't meet current road safety standards."
It will be replaced by a pedestrian refuge, which will remove the need for drivers to stop as people can cross one lane at a time when there is a gap in traffic.
Also, the road will be reduced to one lane in each direction in this area, to stop drivers overtaking on the shoulder.
Council is looking for feedback on the plans and people can have their say on the changes via the https://our.wollongong.nsw.gov.au/ site until June 22.
