About 4pm, police observed a car driving erratically on Railway Street, Corrimal.
Police attempted to stop the car, and when it didn't do so, a pursuit was initiated.
A short time later, the car hit a gutter and then a traffic signal pole.
The two occupants of the car, believed to be teenage girls according to police, were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
NSW Ambulance Inspector Norm Rees said the two females lost control of the vehicle and hit a traffic light on the corner of Princes Highway and Railway Street, Corrimal.
They were initially trapped, but soon self-extricated from the vehicle.
Both occupants were transported to Wollongong Hospital with facial injuries, and for further assessment.
One of the witnesses at the scene told the Mercury the driver had clipped a gutter while traveling northbound on the highway and driven straight into the traffic light.
Inquiries are continuing.
