Jesse Noel Cook, 23, of Warilla appeared in Wollongong Local Court on Thursday charged over his alleged involvement in the attack that centred around a VY Holden Commodore.
He was applying for bail over charges of aggravated break and enter, inflicting grievous bodily harm, assault and car theft.
Co-accused, David Boyden - who is Cook's stepbrother - was appearing on Thursday at Liverpool Court, also charged over the alleged attacks.
Police facts tendered to Wollongong court stated that Cook had been released on parole just a month before the alleged attack on Tuesday night.
The facts allege Boyden had sold the victim the Commodore in July for $2500.
On August 24, Cook sent messages to the victim saying they would buy the car back for $1000.
When the victim refused, Cook allegedly responded "You've got until midnight to accept it or we take the car back from you".
At 8.30pm that night, police allege the pair visited the victim's house, where a friend was helping with repairs on the car.
Police claim Cook got out of the car and smashed a bottle of alcohol on the driveway.
The friend went outside, only to allegedly be punched repeatedly in the jaw by Cook, who screamed "where the f--- are the keys?".
The man who bought the car saw this and locked the screen door.
Cook and Boyden - allegedly armed with a meat cleaver - broke down the door, according to police.
Once inside, the man was allegedly hit with the cleaver across his arms and legs before handing over the keys to the Commodore.
The pair then allegedly drove off, with Cook in the passenger seat.
When he was arrested on Wednesday afternoon, it's alleged Cook denied being at the Dapto residence or assaulting anyone.
In court, Cook's solicitor said the accused had a heavily pregnant partner and needed to get bail to be at the birth and look after the baby.
He added Cook denied the charges and needed to be at liberty to prepare his defence.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Tanya Pavlin opposed bail, saying some of the charges came with a maximum 25-year jail sentence.
"He has an extensive record, and is currently on parole and has an extensive history of non-compliance with court orders," Sgt Pavlin said.
The facts state the parole was related to fraud, destroying property, stealing and other offences.
Magistrate Girotto said these were "extremely serious offences" and that there was a strong prosecution case.
She noted that he had only been granted parole last month, which was not due to expire until July 2021.
Cook was refused bail and will return to Wollongong Local Court on October 28.
Lake Illawarra police are appealing for anyone who saw a black VY Holden Commodore Storm ute leaving the premises around the time of incident, or its whereabouts now, to get in contact.
