A Norfolk Island pine at Kiama was struck by lightning on Tuesday afternoon.
The tree, adjacent the Terralong and Manning streets roundabout, was left with a visible scar.
Kiama Council has called in an arborist to inspect the tree, which will include examining damage at the top.
A nearby pine was also struck by lightning in recent years, and the top had to be removed.
The tree has been cordoned off as a safety measure and people are asked not come inside the barrier to examine the damage or take photos.
