Ashton has learnt to walk three times in his short life.
The Wonoona child has had two double hip replacement, and has right-sided hemiplegia (a form of cerebral palsy) and also has a brain tumour.
A three-wheeled trike, called a frame runner, gives kids with mobility challenges, like Ashton, the chance to run and walk with relative ease.
"Ashton couldn't walk until he was four years old," Renee said.
"He can only walk short distances, and is often in a wheelchair, but this had him out of the chair and moving freely.
"It was extremely emotional to see him run for the first time."
That was more than a year ago. Ever since Renee has been making plans to share the joy of running with other children and their families.
She hopes to establish a weekly frame running group for primary-school aged children in the Illawarra.
Frame running provides a chance to make friends and be active.
It's also a possible pathway to the Paralympics for those with a competitive streak.
"We want to get other kids moving and smiling," she said.
"We want to create an inclusive fun space for kids with a disability in balance and mobility - if they can't walk or run without falling over this would be suitable."
The group will operate under Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT.
A come and try day on Friday, March 12 is available for families with a child who might enjoy frame running.
The session will be held at the University of Wollongong's Sports Hub from 4pm-5.30pm.
The day is free, but participants must register here: https://www.wsnsw.org.au/events/91666/
Renee is also fundraising to purchase frame runners for the group.
She hopes to raise enough money to purchase 12 frame runners, and pay a sports physiotherapist to coach the children.
Donations can be made to Frame Running Wollongong BSB 637000 account number 724811280.
