Police say a 53-year-old man was walking with his female partner through the Wollongong CBD close to midnight after a night out, when another man approached them on Atchison Street.
Police said a scuffle broke out between the men, resulting in the 53-year-old Wollongong man suffering a number of stab wounds to the abdomen area.
The man then allegedly grabbed the victim's mobile phone and ran off towards Burelli Street.
Police don't believe the two men were known to each other.
Emergency services were called and the 53-year-old man was treated at the scene by Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Wollongong Hospital for treatment.
As of Saturday afternoon he remains in hospital receiving treatment, and his injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.
Chief Inspector Angela Burnell from Wollongong Police District said the victim's partner didn't suffer any physical injuries, but was "very shaken up from the incident".
Officers from Wollongong Police District established a crime scene and began an investigation into the incident.
Chief Inspector Burnell said police were reviewing CCTV footage.
Police have also appealed to anyone who might have witnessed the incident or saw a man matching his description in the Wollongong CBD and has dashcam footage, to come forward.
"If you were in that area at that time and have a dashcam, could you have a look through it, because you might hold the key to finding this offender that we're looking for," she said.
"Dashcam is common practice, so somebody may have something."
