Woonona, for instance, is one that can catch out those unfamiliar with the region.
And of course, there's the standard "Woolongong" misspelling of the city. Though Menulog recently managed to mangle it to "Woollongong" on a billboard.
But you'd expect Wollongong City Council to get it right.
Yet, a new illuminated street sign that has gone up on the corner of Smith and Keira streets suggests that street has been renamed as "Kiera Street".
A spokeswoman from Wollongong City Council said it wasn't directly responsible for installing the sign, instead stating it was the fault of a contractor.
"Council is aware of the misspelling of the Keira Street sign and is working with the council licensee who installs the signage to rectify the error," the spokeswoman said.
She declined to state whether there were any measures in place to vet street signage to ensure all names are correctly spelt.
The spokeswoman said council will not have to foot the bill to see that a new sign with the E and I in their correct positions is installed.
"The licensee will amend the signage as soon as possible and there will be no cost to council to replace the signage," she said.
