The initiative is designed to provide a rewarding career with meaningful employment with trainees completing a Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability). And helps participants move from welfare into paid work with The Disability Trust.
Accredited training was provided by TAFE and the Trust's own compulsory modules. There was also a work experience component.
Participant Jodie Post said after raising her children she wanted to get more involved in the community.
"I love working with people and I love talking with people. It is always great to give back. This training was really good and really exciting," she said.
Member for Wollongong Paul Scully said a change in circumstance can occur at any time. And the interest in the program showed the strength and commitment of people willing to get in and help out the NDIS scheme and help people with a disability get the kind of care that all the graduates were really looking forward to providing.
The Disability Trust learning programs manager Cathy James said it was the second time the program had been run.
"They have done their placement and we have feedback from their team leaders and supervisors as to their suitability to the roles," Ms James said.
"They are not guaranteed of employment but we hope they do get employment with us.
"Three are already placed starting Monday. Next week offers will be made to some of the others. The training means they will be able to hit the ground running because they are skilled up ready to start work.
"The program has been so successful we are looking at expanding it up to the Hunter region, the South Sydney region and also down the Far South Coast.
"We are getting some really skilled employees from it."
