Unbeaten in the opening month, the Dogs provided a large contingent to the Illawarra representative team that went down to Newcastle, then they were flattened by title rivals Wests when they returned to club duties, trailing 28-nil at half-time and conceding 40-16.
They fired back with a 62-10 demolition of struggling Dapto last Saturday, but face another stern examination of their premiership credentials when they face Thirroul at Collegians Sports Centre on Saturday.
"It's a wake-up call," Thompson told the From The Hill podcast. "You've got to be put back in place sometimes and star grounded.
"I think the big test will be this week against Thirroul, that will pretty much put us in place for the year, if we put in a good performance."
Thompson praised Collegians ability to return a force, after the club opted to miss last season when the Covid-19 epidemic began.
Thirroul and Collies are locked together on top. with third-placed Wests facing Corrimal at Ziems Park.
