The operation is along the southbound lanes of the Princes Highway, alongside the Bombo train station.
The area is just past the southern border of the Shellharbour LGA, where the lockdown ends.
A police spokeswoman said officers were conducting COVID compliance checks as well as drug and alcohol tests.
"NSW Police are on every highway at different times and locations, maintaining a high-visibility presence to keep road users safe from drug and alcohol-affected motorists, as well as the community safe from the spread of COVID-19," the spokeswoman said.
"Residents from Greater Sydney - including Wollongong and Shellharbour - are reminded of the Public Health Order and stay-at-home restrictions."
According to LiveTraffic, southbound traffic is heavy in the area, backing back to the Riverside Drive turn-off.
