Brent Huckel, manager of Bendalong Point Tourist Park, said he and his wife Julie were in the process of getting hundreds of holidaymakers out of the park after the Rural Fire Service issued an emergency warning for the area.
Mr Huckel said he was recommending people leave the site and head towards Ulladulla as a fire at Deans Gap, west of Wandandian, had closed the Braidwood-Nowra Road in the opposite direction.
Mr Huckel told the Mercury people were feeling ‘‘terrible’’ as he rushed around and tried to move them to safety.
The RFS issued the emergency warning around 3.30pm this afternoon as the Deans Gap fire continued to burn in catastrophic fire danger conditions.
Under these conditions, fires are uncontrollable, unpredictable and fast moving and embers may be blown great distances away.
