With reference to the article on the Easter police blitz (Mercury, April 14), this temporary increase in demerit points and penalties won’t work. We have already seen 11 deaths on NSW roads so far this month.

As a student at UOW, I see people take risks almost every time I get behind the wheel. Reckless driving isn’t a one-weekend occurrence – there were two accidents on Mount Ousley last week.
A mentality has evolved whereby drivers believe their time is far too valuable to be spent going a couple of km/h under the speed limit.
There has recently been a point-to-point speed camera for heavy vehicles constructed at both ends of Mount Ousley.
If the cameras were modified to monitor lighter vehicles as well, there would be a drastic decrease in the number of drivers speeding and the number of crashes.
If the only thing that can slow down drivers is their wallet, then we need to capitalise on that.
