Australian Maverick Banes had to dig deep to stay in the hunt for singles glory at the Wollongong ITF Futures tournament at Beaton Park on Friday.
But he will walk away with a trophy regardless of this weekend's results, after combining with Gavin van Peperzeel to take out the doubles crown.
Banes endured a three-hour thriller against American rival Mitchell Krueger, before backing up to win the doubles 6-2 6-2 against Luke Harvey and Mitchell Robins.
After losing the first set tie-breaker 8-6, 22-year-old Banes held his nerve in the second to square the ledger.
Banes bounced back from an early break in the decider, eventually winning 6-7 7-6 6-2.
Krueger will rue converting just three of his 11 break point opportunities in the match, which continued well after top seed Jarmere Jenkins and third seed Dane Propoggia advanced to the semi-finals, to be held on Saturday.
The American Jenkins, powered to a convincing 6-2 6-1 victory over Mitchell Robins as he chases the trophy in the second of two Wollongong tournaments.
Propoggia outclassed van Peperzeel, winning by the same scoreline as Jenkins.
Banes will meet Jenkins in a semi-final showdown at Beaton Park, while Propoggia faces off against Jose Statham, who beat Bai Yan of China, 6-2 6-3.
Statham is the only unseeded player remaining in the draw.
Jenkins is the highest ranked player in the tournament at 216.
Brydan Klein, the Australian who defected to Great Britain, withdrew from the tournament with a leg injury on Thursday.
Klein took out the first 32-player Futures tournament victory last Sunday.
