A total of $25 million for lifts at Unanderra station is ridiculous.

Just $5million would buy each of the 300 people who attended the rally a brand new car.
A more practical notion might be to buy a wheelchair-friendly minibus to ferry those with difficulties, free of charge, to another station coinciding with the timetable.
If the weekly cost of such a vehicle including driver(s) was $5000, then the $25million would fund it for 100 years.
It seems that every government or council project costs many times what a private individual would pay.
Stricter scrutiny of where the money goes could only be beneficial to the community.

Congratulations to Ben Langford for his well-researched exposure of Wollongong Council’s drainage policies (Mercury, March 18).
Local residents must be amazed at the sheer arrogance of Wollongong council engineers, in rejecting Australian rainfall and runoff guidelines on blockage of culverts.
Senior experts in this field have developed these guidelines, over years of research.
The AR&R is an industry bible, just the same as Australian Standards, which are incorporated into local government regulations, requiring compliance by all, as a statutory requirement.
Now these council engineers want to spend more years re-inventing the wheel to satisfy their own ego trip. Why?
We have a standard in AR&R to work to. Let us get on with it, and get some justice for those who are disadvantaged by the council engineer’s head in the sand refusal to accept the industry standard.
After battling this council for more than 40 years, this latest arrogant action reinforces my decision to retire from practice.

Apparently, state Labor, from the erstwhile leader down to the likely soon-to-be former member for Wollongong, have never browsed Basic Financial Management 101. They clearly don’t understand the difference between a ‘‘sale’’ and a ‘‘lease’’ and the vastly different cash flow implications for each.
Or perhaps they think perpetuating the lie about the ‘‘poles and wires’’ may help their upcoming electoral cause. Here’s a bit of advice to Labor about cosying up to the Greens.
It will only end in tears. Just ask Rudd and Gillard.

Comments from Liberal supporter Sean Prince criticising ALP commitment to upgrade Mt Kembla Lookout demonstrates how out of touch with the Illawarra his party is.
I am sure the Illawarra tourist industry would appreciate this world-class site being developed to its full potential.

Your article on the No Land Tax Party (Mercury, March 19) was a major disappointment.
This party has a real chance of picking up an upper house seat yet we know nothing about them apart from they are opposed to land tax. Might I suggest a follow-up article giving more details of the party and their policies.
