Four rounds were played last weekend with some thrilling matches in round four in particular; including three matches decided by just a single shot on the final end.
Jeremy Henry is a chance of winning his second zone title for 2016 after already winning the Triples and with partner Harley McDonald improved with every match in the opening four rounds.
Henry and McDonald were close to unstoppable in the round of 16, beating clubmates Jesse Noronha and Matt Miles 25-3.
Henry now takes former Warilla member Jared Hamilton and Peter McCauley (Dapto Citizens) at Windang on Saturday morning for a spot in the semi-finals.
Hamilton beat top Warilla pair Leif Selby (skip) and Warren Falconer 22-21 in the round of 16 in one of the top matches of the tournament.
Shane garvey is chasing another Zone 16 title after he and Dylan Skinner (Wiseman Park) advanced to the quarter-finals with a 21-11 win over Dave Tyrrell and Jim Davies.
Garvey now takes on Warilla’s Toby Peters-Garry Sampson who won four matches last weekend to reach the last eight. Sampson defeated Blake Hofman-Liam Dun (Corrimal) 23-18 in the fourth round.
Oak Flats Paul Woods and Alan McDonald won a 23-22 thriller in round four against Rod Barrett-Joel Mulholland jnr (Warilla) to book a quarter-final spot against Dapto Citizens’ Mark Larsen and Brett Pieper.
Skip Larsen ended the run of Mal Lyons and Robbie Warren (Wiseman Park) 23-18 in round four.
The other quarter-final features Warilla pair Eric Haynes and Jayden Gebbie taking on Jamie Mitchell-Mick Japundza (Wiseman Park).
Meanwhile, the Zone 16 senior pairs (over 60s) is down to the semi-finals with four clubs still alive for the title.
Towradgi’s Norm Flanagan-BRIAN COOK take on Robert Fahey-Jack Forbes (Corrimal) in one semi-final at Windang on Saturday afternoon (1pm).
Forbes had a strong 28-16 win over the top Warilla pair Ted Clarke and Geoff McGillivray in te quarter-finals, while Flanagan had a 22-9 win over Dallas Delatorre-Peter Thelan.
Windang Peter Thomson and Carlos Hernandez will play on their home green against Albion Park’s Roger Kelly and Mick Duprez in the other semi.
Hernandez beat Bill Todd-Paul Robertson (Wiseman Park) 22-13, while Duprez took out Barry Burcell-Robert Wilson (Figgy Bowlo) 22-21 in a brilliant quarter-final.
Ten clubs had a team through to the last 16 of the Senior Pairs.
The Illawarra senior pairs and open pairs finals are on Sunday morning. (9am) with the champions to represent Zone 16 at the State Championships in October.
