The display from artists working in the medium of handmade felt will be featured from June 2 – 7 from 10am to 4pm each day.
The group, which was formed in 2009, has 25 members who meet twice a month at the Shell Cove Community Centre. Felting interests include garments, accessories, jewellery, furnishings and sculptures. Many hold awards from local and interstate shows as well as the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
Feltmaking is one of the earliest forms of textile and is produced using fibres such as wool, alpaca and cashmere.
The wet feltmaking method uses friction, soap and water, which combine the fibres to produce a product known for its insulation properties, durability and versatility.
It is used domestically in such things as hats, wraps and handbags. In industry it can be found in insulation, packaging and bearings.
Needle feltmaking and boiled felt have become popular in recent years. The former requires no water as it relies solely on the use of barbed needles. Boiled felt is achieved by subjecting knitted fibres to water and heat.
Get along and be surprised by the creativity of members and the wide range of items in the exhibition. Many of the artworks and wearable items will be for sale.
On June 3, 'Meet the Artists' will take place from 2pm – 4pm.
