Wollongong Traffic & Highway Patrol officers were patrolling East Corrimal when they attempted to stop a vehicle due to the manner it was being driven, police said.
The vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit commenced with the officers activating their lights and sirens.
The vehicle eventually drove into a driveway in Cawley Street at Bellambi and the driver attempted to flee on foot.
When a senior constable attempted to arrest the driver, he resisted, and allegedly punched the officer in the face.
Police said the man continued to assault the officer until further police attended and arrested him.
The 31-year-old man was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he refused a breath analysis. He was then charged with assault police, hinder police and refuse breath test.
The man was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday.
The injured officer attended Wollongong Hospital where he was treated for facial injuries and discharged.
