Officers rushed to the Lorking Street address at 1.10am and found the 39-year-old woman who had suffered serious injuries.
A five-month-old baby boy was also located in the home uninjured.
He was taken to Wollongong Hospital as the woman and the baby were the only ones in the home when police arrived.
Neighbours say they’ve seen the woman walking in the street with a pram and expressed shock at being woken by police in the early hours to say she had been murdered.
Police began combing the area around 2am.
Wollongong police detectives and forensics remain on scene.
As of 9.30am, the police were line searching. It’s believed they are looking for a weapon.
