Timothy John Nyboer attracted plenty of police attention on the morning of January 15 after neighbours reported hearing loud bangs, sounding like gunshots, at his home on Buttenshaw Drive just before 9am.
Specialist police flooded the area and the street was put into lockdown, however officers later confirmed the sound had come from Nyboer using fireworks on the property.
Meanwhile, police returned to the property in the early hours of Tuesday morning after receiving calls from concerned neighbours.
Police will allege Nyboer armed himself with a knife soon after police arrived at the property at 12.20am and refused to leave the house.
Police set up a perimeter and began to negotiate with Nyboer.
His elderly mother came out of the house unharmed a short time later, however Nyboer allegedly remained inside the house and refused to give himself up for another six hours.
He surrendered just before 7am and was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he was charged with using a weapon to resist arrest and two counts of intimidating police.
He was also charged with cultivating a prohibited plant after police allegedly found seven cannabis plants at the house.
Nyboer was shirtless and sporting a large bandage on his left arm when he appeared in Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday afternoon.
He did not apply for bail and thanked Magistrate Susan McGowan when she formally refused it.
“I love Silverwater,” Nyboer said as he stood up to leave the audio-visual link room.
The case was adjourned to February 12 for plea or mention.
