Roads and Maritime Services are removing the overtaking lanes between Berry and Bomaderry as part of work on the Princes Highway upgrade.
The move comes just a week before the start of the school holidays.
However, roadworks will be halted for most of the school holiday period.
All-up 2.3 kilometres of overtaking lanes are being removed along the 12-kilometre stretch of highway between Berry and Bomaderry.

The four overtaking lanes will be progressively closed, starting with the northbound lane south of Boxsells Lane and the southbound lane near Morschels Lane.
The closures will be carried out during night work this week to update line marking.
"We understand roadworks can be frustrating, however safety will always remain a priority," said Kiama MP Gareth Ward.
"By reducing overtaking opportunities, we hope to see drivers stick to the roadworks speed limits, improving safety for everyone.
"The lane removal will also increase shoulder width and provide four additional breakdown bays."
The other two overtaking opportunities - north of Strongs Road and north of O'Keefes Lane - will be removed at a later stage.
An RMS spokeswoman said the holiday period will see another change.
"To ensure the best traffic flow for holiday makers, work will be suspended on the Princes Highway Berry to Bomaderry upgrade during the Easter and Anzac Day holiday period," the spokeswoman said.
Work will stop at 6pm on April 17 and restart atl 7am on April 29. The 80km/h limit will remain in place.
