The vehicle they were in flipped in the northbound lane of the M1 Princes Motorway near Cataract about 1.30pm.
Two Ambulance NSW crews were called to the scene.
The woman, aged in her 30s, and the one-year-old child were not trapped and only had minor grazes and were in shock.
They were transported to Wollongong Hospital in stable conditions.
There was a lot of debris on the road.
The accident caused major traffic delays in both directions.
After emergency services arrived, traffic was slowly able to pass by driving in the breakdown lane.
By 2.45pm all northbound lanes had reopened and heavy traffic was slowly easing.
Bulli and Mt Keira Rural Fire Brigades as well as Wollongong police attended the scene.
