Neil Thomas Sutton was driving a white Holden Commodore with Tassareina Wellington in the passenger seat on the afternoon of November 28 last year when a tradesman in a Toyota Hiace van noticed the car swerving in its lane, mounting the kerb and nearly hitting the guard rail as it travelled along Memorial Drive near Woonona.
When both cars pulled alongside each other, the motorist put his window down and asked Sutton if he was okay.
Sutton replied "leave me alone, we're just having a bit of fun", prompting the driver of the van to chastise him.
"You're driving like a f--kwit, you nearly hit me, the guard rails and the other cars," the man said.
The traffic lights turned green and both vehicles drove off, however Sutton kept pulling the Commodore in front of the Hiace in an attempt to cut him off.
The man eventually stopped his van outside Woonona RSL, where he was due to attend a job.
Sutton and Wellington got out of the vehicle, Wellington armed with a hammer. She called the driver a "white dog" and began smashing the rear window of the van with the weapon.
"I'm going to smash your f--king head in you f--king c--t," she screamed before she and Sutton got back into the Commodore and drove off.
Meanwhile, police had been alerted to Sutton's manner of driving and what had occurred outside the RSL.
Aware of the vehicle's plate number, police discovered it was registered to Sutton at a unit complex in Woonona. Police arrived a short time later to see Sutton driving the vehicle at speed around the carpark.
Given Sutton's manner of driving and reports Wellington was armed with a hammer, police drew their guns and pointed them towards the car, calling out for the vehicle to stop.
Sutton got out of the vehicle and walked up to police, saying "point a gun at me you f--king c--t, I'll f--king smash you."
Police began to grapple with Sutton, at which time he punched one of the officers in the head.
The pair were eventually arrested. Sutton pleaded guilty to assaulting police in Wollongong Local Court on Monday, while Wellington pleaded guilty to resisting police, damaging property and intimidation.
Wellington, who has a limited criminal record, was sentenced to a 12-month intensive corrections order.
Sutton, whose criminal record is more voluminous, had his case adjourned to September so a background report could be prepared.
