Lake Illawarra District Police are investigating how a large sum of cash came to be dumped in in West Dapto.

Duty Officer Chief Inspector Bryan Pederson said a boy located the large quantity in Mullett Creek off Bong Bong Road around 9:20am on Monday.
He then alerted a family member who contact police of the unusual find.
Lake Illawarra officers soon attended the scene and discovered multiple notes floating in the water.

Crews from Fire and Rescue NSW and the State Emergency Services were called in for assistance to retrieve the money from the creek and any other evidence they could gather.
Emergency crews could be seen paddling up and down the waterway for the cash grab.
"We've taken what we have to the police station, and will investigate whether it is legitimate currency or counterfeit," Chief Insp Pederson told the Mercury.
Investigations are continuing.
