Professor Dianne Jolley on Wednesday faced Downing Centre Local Court after being arrested at the university's Haymarket campus on November 15.
The 49-year-old, formerly an associate professor at the University of Wollongong's school of chemistry, joined UTS in late 2018.
Professor Jolley is currently on leave. The university is assisting the police ... and also providing support to our community.
Jolley told police she received the first of 10 threatening letters in July allegedly in relation to the cancellation of a university course.
She has been charged with dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception, giving false information about a person or property in danger and making a false representation resulting in a police investigation.
A UTS spokesman said the university was helping police with their investigation.
"UTS is aware that charges have been laid against Professor Dianne Jolley," the spokesman said in a statement.
"Professor Jolley is currently on leave. The university is assisting the police ... and also providing support to our community."
Jolley was granted conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday where she pleaded not guilty.
She's scheduled to return to the same court on February 12.
