A police officer has been knocked unconscious after allegedly being headbutted while trying to arrest a man near Dapto on Tuesday morning.

Officers from the Southern Region Enforcement Squad went to apprehend a 48-year-old man on outstanding warrants at a motor inn off Prince Edward Drive in Brownsville about 11.40am.
The man allegedly resisted arrest and headbutted a male officer rendering him unconscious.
The officer regained conscious a short time after and was taken to Wollongong Hospital with lacerations to his head.
As the 48-year-old man was being put into the caged police truck, he kicked the back window injuring himself.
He was taken to Shellharbour Hospital for treatment under police guard.
Inquiries are continuing and charges against the man are expected to be laid.
