The three-year-old Bay gelding was sitting at the back of the field approaching the final 300 metres when jockey Blaike McDougall found a gap and capitalised to salute by a length in the Maiden Handicap (over 1300m).
Kateru secured victory from Matthew Dunn's Divine Eleven. Heimberg, trained by Joseph Pride, was third while the Jason Coyle-trained Air to Air took fourth place.
Saturday marked Kateru's fourth start. The gelding is from the Godolphin Racing stable.
Fellow Godolphin runners Trekking and Kementari, both trained by Cummings, finished second and third respectively in the Hall Mark Stakes (over 1200m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday. The Hawkes Racing-trained Greyworm saluted.
Godolphin stable rep Steve Thompson said Kateru was a "lovely Sepoy gelding" and "we've always had a good opinion of him".
"He was fitter today with a run under his belt and first chance we've been able to get him over 1300 metres and he's always a horse that shows us a bit of ability," Thompson said.
"He ran third in his third start in a benchmark 64, so it always takes a pretty good horse to do that."
There were plenty of reasons for local trainers to celebrate, with Gwenda Markwell, and Luke and Robert Price both recording wins on Saturday.
Markwell's Speed and Style, ridden by Madison Waters, pipped the Cummings-trained Chanting in the Benchmark 64 Handicap (over 1200m).
Earlier, the Prices' eight-year-old grey gelding Buderoo Knight, ridden by Brock Ryan, won by a couple of lengths from Micks New Chicks in the Benchmark 70 Handicap (over 1400m).
There were also delightful doubles for trainer Chris Waller and jockeys Brock Ryan and Adrian Layt at Kembla Grange.
Both of Waller's successful runners were able to hold off challenges from Markwell-trained horses.
Waller's High Academy, ridden by Chad Lever, secured victory from Markwell's Design Ahead in the Maiden Plate (over 1500m).
The Waller-trained Reformist, ridden by Brock Ryan, also saluted from Markwell's Pioneer in the Benchmark 64 Handicap over 1200m. It was also Ryan's second winner for the day, after riding Buderoo Knight to victory.
Meanwhile, Layt rode the Gerald Ryan-trained MacLeays to victory in the 2yo Maiden Handicap (over 1400m) from Black Bolt and also saluted aboard Tampering, trained by Kerry Parker, in the Class 1 Handicap (over 1500m).
