Notorious Illawarra woman Belinda Van Krevel bailed on assault charges

Van Krevel, who became a household name in 2001 after being found guilty of soliciting her then-lover to kill her own father, said she and the woman had been celebrating the arrest of Van Krevel's "abusive" ex-boyfriend earlier that day when the pair got into a brawl on Thursday evening over the divvying up of some cannabis.

Police will allege the duo grappled with each other, including grabbing each other by the hair, before Van Krevel put her hands around the woman's neck and squeezed, making it hard for the woman to breath.

Van Krevel then allegedly punched the victim in the back of the head twice.

A neighbour heard the commotion and came to separate the women, at which time Van Krevel allegedly threw several objects at the victim, including ceramic statues and glass candles holders.

The victim was hit in the face by one of the objects, causing three small cuts on her face and mouth.

Van Krevel was arrested later that evening. She declined to be interviewed and was charged with two assault offences.

In Wollongong Local Court on Friday, Van Krevel's lawyer said her client had been acting in self defence during the fight and would defend the charges.

"She says she was assaulted by the victim," defence lawyer Melea Mullard said.

Police opposed Van Krevel's application for bail, citing her extensive history of violence including a two-year jail sentence in 2014 for stabbing her then-boyfriend in the neck, leg and arm and a two-month jail sentence in 2017 for stealing an elderly woman's handbag at Windang.

However, Magistrate Michael Love agreed to release Van Krevel, saying he couldn't conclude that the case against her was strong.

Her bail conditions include thrice weekly reporting to police, AVO compliance, no contact with the alleged victim and the complete abstention from unprescribed drugs and alcohol.

The matter will return to court in July.
