The 23-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, allegedly told the woman "today is the last day anyone will ever see you alive" during the violent ordeal, which left the woman bruised, battered and terrified, police claim.
Documents tendered to Wollongong Local Court on Monday said the man allegedly broke into the woman's house in the early hours of Sunday morning and confronted her inside her bedroom as she was changing their son's nappy.
He allegedly grabbed her around the throat and said "I'm going to get you c--t" before climbing on top of her and pinning her to the bed with his knees on her chest.
He then allegedly put his hand over the woman's mouth and nose and began suffocating her.
Moments later, he allegedly grabbed her in a headlock and pulled her into kitchen, telling her "you can sit on the floor like a dog".
The man then grabbed a knife from the kitchen drawer and held it against her throat, police allege.
The woman said her ex-partner let her go a few moments later and she went to check on their son, who was crying.
Inside the bedroom, the man allegedly started going through her phone.
He allegedly became further enraged and accuse her of seeing other men, which she denied.
However, the woman told police her ex-partner began bashing her again, this time grabbing her hair and repeatedly smashing her head into the cast-iron bed frame, causing a deep laceration to the back of her head.
"Today is the last day anyone will ever see you alive," he allegedly told her.
"I'm not stopping until you're dead c--t."
The victim began taking shallow breaths and pretended she was unconscious, at which time the man picked up their son and allegedly said "say goodbye to mummy, you're never going to see her again".
He then left the premises.
The victim ran across the road to a neighbour's house and called police.
Officers responding to the incident found the man pushing a pram along a nearby road a short time later.
He was arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where he was charged with special aggravated breaking and entering (inflicting grievous bodily harm).
He sought bail in court on Monday, claiming the woman had made up the whole encounter.
"He says he never attended her property that night," defence lawyer Caitlin Drabble said on the man's behalf.
"He denies being responsible for any allegations contained in the police fact sheets and says the alleged victim has a history of making up allegations against him".
However, Magistrate Michael Love found the case against the man was a strong one, noting police observed the victim was injuries consistent with her version of events.
He refused to release the man and adjourned the case to August 19 for further mention.
