Taylor Harvey, 22, got ready for work on Monday morning only to find his work gear gone from the back of his ute.
Mr Harvey said he did not hear any commotion as it was a windy and rainy night.
"They cut the cables and took everything," he said. "The tools cost about $10,000 and the trailer cost $2000.
"I work for myself, but I am a sub-contractor. I only recently started my own business after finishing my apprenticeship. This really sucks.
"Now I've had to buy more tools and I wasn't able to work on Monday or Tuesday as I reported it to police and was dealing with the insurance company."
Mr Harvey said he was insured for $8000 and had several locks on the tools boxes.
"I couldn't afford the next option to insure my gear for $30,000 so now I will be $4000 out of pocket," he said.
Mr Harvey said the theft had been another blow during what had already been a tough year as his hours had been reduced due to COVID.
Officers from Wollongong Police District are investigating the theft and are appealing for anyone with information, or who may have seen anything suspicious in the area at the time, to contact police.
Mr Harvey hopes the police can see the thieves leave on security footage from nearby businesses.
