But the COVID-19 pandemic has not stopped the Rotary Club of Shellharbour City from finding new ways to help people in need.
Shellharbour Rotarians were still keen to find ways to put "service above self" in 2020 and felt it was more important than ever to reach out and look for opportunities to make a difference.
They approached Foodcare in Shellharbour to see if there was something they could do to help it provide food relief to low income families. After making a few inquiries they discovered they would be able to provide additional assets for the service.
Foodcare Shellharbour's Karen Mathews said the Rotary Club provided a generous donation which enabled the purchase of a much-needed commercial chest freezer for the store.
"Foodcare caters to over 80 local families a week offering low cost and free food, and without this freezer, it would mean that we would have less food to offer those that come each time," Ms Mathews said.
"Rotary approached us in wanting to partner with Foodcare and enquired about referring families to our services.
"They saw our immediate need for more freezer space and didn't hesitate to help.
"Their donation, along with referrals, has been such a blessing and we are so grateful."
Foodcare operates Thursdays from 10am to 2.30pm at the Shellharbour Community Church, 500 Shellharbour Road, Shellharbour.
Rotarian Larry How said the service club was only too happy to help.
"During the difficult and unprecedented situations we are all experiencing at this time, the Rotary Club of Shellharbour City has realised it's more important than normal for Rotary to reach out into the community to seek other avenues where forms of support are required, needs are identified and where assistance can be given," Mr How said.
"For these reasons, the club approached another community-minded group, Foodcare Shellharbour, to establish a partnership that would benefit each other in providing those services so necessary now for deserving families."
